What Are These Flies in my Bathroom?

Drain flies are small, about 1/8 inch. The key identifier is the pattern on their wings. Drain flies have a unique pattern of the veins in its wings. They are usually found around drains.

Drain flies breed in drains, sewers, septic tanks and soil that has been contaminated. They bring with them more than a hundred bacteria including salmonella, staphylococcus, dysentery and collibacilli. Though drain flies are not reported to transmit any diseases to humans, they are capable of contaminating food as they originate from a filthy source. Not only are drain flies disgusting, but they are also a nuisance.

How did they get there?

Drain flies can indicate some sort of plumbing issue.  Some plumbing issues include, but are not limited to:

  1. A broken pipe.
  2. The hair catcher in a shower drain can be a breeding ground for these flies.
  3. You may need to have the grime in the tub drain snaked out.
  4. You may need a new shower pan. Shower pans are more prone to leaks and the area under the shower pan can easily become a breeding source.

It’s important to keep an eye on your drains and pipes and ensure they are kept clean on a regular basis. Regular maintenance from a professional plumbing company can help you avoid issues like drain flies or bigger issues such as having to replace a shower pan.
